Step inside the bat-making process in Sialkot, Pakistan. Explore how raw highland timber is sculpted into tournament-winning cricket weapons.
Sialkot has been recognized globally for more than a century as the epicenter of cricket equipment manufacturing. At SAKI Sports, our craftsmen maintain time-tested woodworking techniques while evolving blade shapes to meet the modern demands of fast-paced tape-ball tournaments.
Note: The following step-by-step description explains the standard, proven cricket bat manufacturing methodology practiced by experienced craftsmen in Sialkot, Pakistan.
The foundation of every high-performance bat is timber selection. In Sialkot, seasoned coconut timber (Coco Wood) and highland Rawalakot wood are carefully graded for density, weight, grain uniformity, and moisture content. Selecting dense, resilient timber ensures the blade can withstand high-impact taped ball strikes without splintering.
Raw timber logs are split into individual clefts and naturally seasoned to stabilize internal moisture. Controlled air-drying prevents future warping or cracking while preserving natural fiber elasticity. The ends are wax-sealed to ensure consistent drying throughout the wood core.
Craftsmen use traditional hand drawknives and spoke shaves to shape the bat face, contoured spine, and massive power edges (45mm to 52mm). The swell and sweet spot are sculpted based on the edition profile — whether an extended low zone for power hitting or a balanced mid-blade for all-round strokeplay.
A great blade is useless without a responsive handle. We use imported Sarawak cane slats glued together with rubber spring inserts. This multi-piece cane construction creates natural flex that absorbs shock upon ball impact, preventing hand vibration and wrist strain.
The top of the shaped blade is precision-cut with a deep V-splice joint. The cane handle is meticulously fitted, glued with high-tensile waterproof epoxy resin, and clamped under heavy pressure until completely set. This seamless joint ensures zero kinetic loss between the batsman's hands and the blade.
The assembled bat undergoes progressive multi-stage sanding using graduated grit abrasives. Sanding transitions from coarse leveling to ultra-fine finishing, smoothing wood fibers, removing tool marks, and perfecting the aerodynamic contours along the spine and shoulders.
The hitting face and edges are roller-compacted or hand-boned using traditional hardwood burnishing tools. This process hardens outer wood fibers, compressing the sweet spot to maximize kinetic rebound ("ping") and prepare the bat for high-velocity taped tennis ball tournaments.
Signature metallic foil decals, holographic badges, and protective face sheets are applied. Whether the menacing Black Cobra styling, vibrant Coconut Power orange accents, or custom OEM private-label branding for international clients, decals are pressed with heat-resistant adhesive.
Before any bat leaves our workshop, it is audited for weight (checked between 810g and 910g depending on target spec), center of gravity balance, handle alignment, and acoustic ping resonance. Only blades that meet our stringent standards receive the final SAKI Sports approval stamp.
Bats are fitted with protective polymer toe guards, dual-textured chevron rubber grips, and placed in padded vinyl bat covers. Bulk wholesale orders are carefully wrapped in moisture-resistant export cartons ready for domestic couriers or international air and sea freight.
